Prof. Dr. Jan Christoph Steckel leitet die Arbeitsgruppe "Klimaschutz und Entwicklung" am MCC. Er forscht hauptsächlich zur Rolle von Entwicklungsländern bei der Verringerung ("mitigation") des Klimawandels. Er ist ebenfalls Professor für Klima- und Entwicklungsökonomie an der BTU Cottbus.

- Klimapolitische Instrumente in Entwicklungs- und Schwellenländern
- Ökonomischer Strukturwandel
Professor Jan Steckel war Autor im IPCC Sonderbericht zu „Erneuerbaren Energien“ (2011), im fünften (2014) und sechsten (2022) IPCC Sachstandsbericht der Arbeitsgruppe III (Vermeidung) und Leitautor zum Thema Kohleausstieg im UNEP GAP Report 2017. Er arbeitete am „International Panel for Social Progress“ mit. Bis Ende 2016 leitete er im Rahmen des von der DFG finanzierten Sonderforschungsbereichs "Sustainable Manufacturing - Globale Wertschöpfung nachhaltig gestalten" das Teilprojekt "Makroökonomischer Nachhaltigkeitsbewertung" an der TU Berlin (FG Ökonomie des Klimawandels).
